Glenna Marshall – Suffering Well

Glenna Marshall is an author and a musician who has a love for the scriptures… and iced coffee, and dry shampoo. 🙂
I loved how we could talk about nearly anything and still feel a sense of God’s joy and peace surrounding it.
She has a TON of encouragement to share in the struggle of illness, infertility and just everyday life.
If you’ve ever struggled with having a baby or felt the weight of a diagnosis that is final. You’ll walk away from our time feeling more encouraged. I cannot wait for you to draw closer to the Lord through the experiences that Glenna has to share.
Three Things Glenna Loves:

Dry shampoo. We all wanna know what the best one is. For Glenna, that’s Not Your Mother’s dry shampoo. I am proud to say I’ve taken the whole dry shampoo thing to another level! 12 days without a shampoo!!! That’s a record! And just because your hair is not shampooed doesn’t mean you are going un showered! We are all still clean and fresh over here!

As a professed coffee snob, Glenna has a surprising secret ingredient in her iced coffee…it’s not what you think! Instant coffee!

Glenna and I both struggle with chronic illness so finding ways to enjoy coffee or hot drinks can get a bit creative! I have a hot frothy drink that makes my day too. The secret is hemp hearts.

Here’s my recipe for the creamy hot frothy drink that works as a coffee substitute:

Ingredients

1 cup of Coconut Milk, Almond Milk, or Oat Milk

1 tablespoon liquid MCT oil or coconut oil

1 tablespoon ghee

2-4 drops alcohol-free stevia, optional

1 tablespoon grass-fed collagen

1 tablespoon of Cacao powder

1 tablespoon hemp hearts

Directions: Heat the all the ingredients over the stovetop, except the hemp hearts. Place the heated mixture in the blender with the Hemp Hearts. Blend for 20-30 seconds. Enjoy!

Finally, Voxer is an app that Glenna loves for collaborating with like-minded creatives! If you haven’t heard of it, you might find it’s what your missing in connecting with groups of friends simultaneously.
Glenna and I talk about her struggle with infertility. Her biggest and most heartbreaking realization was acknowledging that there was no chance of getting pregnant.
Feeling like her future had been emptied, Glenna walked wounded in her infertility. And she struggled with bitterness. Attending baby shower after baby shower and with each month new hope would grow and then despair would come.
But Glenna gained wisdom in her hardship, God used her longing for children to uncover her longing to be loved and known by God… and to love and know God.

God used this longing to anchor her hope to Him. It was a long process of seeing God being faithful in the hard times.

There came a point in Glenna’s life where she had to reconcile what she knew about God with what she’s seeing about God. Going to the scriptures daily is where she found those answers.

But what if scripture feels dry? Times when we aren’t receptive to the scripture. Glenna says the Lord is faithful even in this time. Persevering in the scripture is rewarding but it’s work and it’s tough. The hilt spirit will help you persevere and not let His word return void. Later you will see the work of the Holy Spirut when he brings back those scriptures in your life.

Glenna talks about a dry spell that lasted years. She read through the Psalms but it wasn’t clicking. When the time came for Glenna’s family to adopt their 2nd son, suddenly it became intensely difficult. With her health, the stress of the situation made her autoimmune illness worse. Times were extremely hard but God carried her through. And suddenly, the Psalms became Glenna’s lifeline. Those years prior, all the highlights and notes in scripture were lampposts.

We discuss journaling and how it can be helpful in processing our faith and our feelings but also as a great way to look back. Journaling becomes stones of remembrance. These stones become such a benefit. They can be teachers. And they see the faithfulness of our Great God. Learning God’s faithfulness in suffering makes the suffering worth it.

I love my time with Glenna as she encourages us to faithfully press forward in scripture. Here’s a practical way to do it: Pick a book of the Bible and dive in! Then ask yourself, “Who is God And what is His Character?” As Glenna swiftly points out, this Has a cumulative effect of changing your perspective over time.

Finally, Glenna leaves us with His ultimate truth: God will always be with you. He may not pluck you out of the suffering. But He can carry you through.

Glenna’s book, The Promise in His Presence will be available in February 2019 with P&R Publishing.
